Summary
The Certificat d'Etudes Primaires Elémentaires (CEPE) is administered annually by the Office National des Examens et Concours to grade 6 (ISCED 1) students in public and private schools. The CEPE has been administered for more than 50 years.The CEPE is a high-stake and mandatory examination that certifies completion of primary education. It is a requirement for students wishing to pursue lower-secondary education (ISCED 2).
The CEPE is a written examination, administered face-to-face and delivered through paper-pencil tests. All test-takers are presented with the same cognitive booklets or tests, which are aligned with the national curriculum.
The CEPE serves the following purposes:
- student certification for completion of primary education
- student selection to higher education programmes or admission into specific courses or tracks
- supporting teachers (training, relevant materials, etc.)
- promoting competition among schools
- sub-national level monitoring of learning outcomes
- monitoring education quality levels
- planning education policy reforms
Census (all students at the given grades or ages)
Results are reported at the student, sub-national and national levels. Data are disaggregated by sex and type of schools (public and private).
Results are published in reports, which are available in print only. Examination results are broadcasted on the radio.
Scope
The CEPE comprises four tests administered in French. These subjects and the duration of each test are listed below:- Mathematics, 90 minutes, 40% of the total score
- French language, 90 minutes, 30% of the total score
- “Éveil” (History, Geography, Science, Civics, and Religious education), 60 minutes, 20% of the total score.
- Spelling, 30 minutes, 10% of the total score
Description of test items: Test items consist of multiple choice questions with three or more response options, open-ended questions requiring short constructed responses and essay writing.
Description of stimuli: Test stimuli consist of continuous, mixed and multiple texts.
Reporting metrics: Student performance is reported by average score. An average score is computed for all four tests, and a second average score is computed for the Éveil test only.
To pass the CEPE, the minimum requirement is an average score of 10 out of 20 on all four tests and a minimum score of 10 out of 20 on the Éveil test.
