Summary
The Brevet d'Études du Premier Cycle (BEPC) is administered annually by the Ministère de l'Éducation Nationale et de l'Enseignement Technique to grade 9 (ISCED 2) students in general education programmes in public and private schools. The BEPC is a high-stake and mandatory examination that certifies completion of lower secondary education. It is a requirement for students wishing to pursue an upper secondary education (ISCED 2).
The BEPC is a written examination, administered face-to-face and delivered through paper-pencil tests. All test-takers are presented with the same cognitive booklets or tests, which are aligned with the national curriculum.
The BEPC serves the following purposes:
- student certification for completion of lower secondary education
- student selection to higher education programmes or admission into specific courses or tracks
- promoting competition among schools
- monitoring education quality levels
Census (all students at the given grades or ages)
Results are reported at the student level. Examination results are broadcasted on the radio, on television and published in the media.
Scope
The BEPC comprises eight mandatory subjects administered in French, expect for the foreign language tests. The subjects and duration of each test are listed below:- Dictation and questions, 120 minutes
- Essay writing, 120 minutes
- Mathematics, 120 minutes
- Physical sciences 120 minutes
- English language (written), 120 minutes
- English language (oral), 30 minutes
- Foreign language (German or Spanish), 90 minutes
- Physical education
The school-based assessments held during the academic year contribute 40% of the final score, while the subjects assessed in the BEPC contribute 60%.
Description of test items: Test items consist of open-ended questions requiring short constructed responses and essay writing.
Description of stimuli: Test stimuli consist of continuous, non-continuous and mixed texts.
Reporting metrics: Student performance is reported by average score. The minimum requirement to meet the national standard is 50%.
