Summary
The Évaluation Diagnostique des Compétences de Français et de Mathématiques au CE1 has been administered by the Ministère de l'Éducation Nationale et de l'Enseignement Technique since 1995 to grade 3 (ISCED 1) students in public, private and community schools. It has been administered four times at varying frequencies. The next administration is planned in 2016. Students are assessed twice during the school year: in 2011, tests were administered in January and in May.
The assessment is low-stake for students.
The Évaluation Diagnostique des Compétences de Français et de Mathématiques au CE1 is a written assessment, administered face-to-face and delivered through paper-pencil tests. All test-takers are presented with the same cognitive booklets or tests, which are aligned with the national curriculum.
The assessment serves the following purposes:
- sub-national level monitoring of learning outcomes
- monitoring education quality levels
- planning education policy reforms

Results are reported at student level and disaggregated by sex, area of residence ( urban or rural) and type of schools (public, private or community).
Scope
The Évaluation Diagnostique des Compétences de Français et de Mathématiques au CE1 assesses students in French and Mathematics. Tests are administered in French. The domains covered by each subject are listed below:Mathematics:
- Arithmetic operations, 30% of the score
- Numeration, 27.5% of the score
- Geometry, 22.5% of the score
- Measurement, 10% of the score
- Problem solving, 10% of the score
French:
- Grammar, 42.9% of the score
- Spelling, 28.6% of the score
- Verb conjugation, 17.1% of the score
- Reading and comprehension, 11.4% of the score
Description of test items: Test items consist of multiple choice questions with two, three or more response options and open-ended questions requiring short constructed responses.
Description of stimuli: Test stimuli consist of non-continuous texts.
Reporting metrics: Student performance is reported by average score and by proficiency level based on this score. The minimum requirement to meet the national standard is 40%.
