Summary
The Brevet d'Études du Premier Cycle Tchadien (BEPCT) is administered annually by the Ministère de l'Éducation Nationale et de l'Enseignement Technique to grade 10 (ISCED 2) students in general education programmes in public, private and community schools. The BEPCT is a high-stake and mandatory examination that certifies completion of lower secondary education. It is a requirement for students wishing to pursue an upper secondary education (ISCED 3).
The BEPCT is administered face-to-face. It comprises a written component, delivered through paper-pencil tests, and an oral component. All test-takers are presented with the same cognitive booklets or tests, which are aligned with the national curriculum.
The BEPCT serves the following purposes:
- student certification for completion of lower secondary education
- monitoring education quality levels
Census (all students at the given grades or ages)
Results are available at student, school, sub-national and national levels. Results are published in reports, which are available in print.
Scope
The BEPCT comprises seven mandatory subjects administered in French or in Arabic, except for the foreign language test. The subjects and duration of each test are listed below:- Mathematics, 120 minutes
- Civic education, 60 minutes
- Dictation and questions, 80 minutes
- Essay writing/ Paragraph, 120 minutes
- Foreign language (English or Arabic), 90 minutes
- History and Geography, 90 minutes
- Natural sciences or Physics and Chemistry, 90 minutes
Each test contributes 12.5% of the total score for French-speaking students and 10% for Arabic-speaking students. However, the Mathematics test contributes 25% of the total score for French-speaking students and 20% for Arabic-speaking students.
Arabic-speaking students are assessed in two additional subjects, each contributing 10% of the total score:
- French language, 60 minutes
- Islamic culture, 120 minutes
Description of test items: Test items consist of multiple choice questions with three or more response options, open-ended questions requiring short constructed responses, essay writing, and individual project.
Description of stimuli: Test stimuli consist of continuous, non-continuous, mixed and multiple texts.
Reporting metrics: Student performance is reported by average score. The minimum requirement to meet the national standard is 50%.
