The Enquête sur les Acquis Scolaires des Élèves de la 8ème année en Mathématiques et en Sciences liées à la Vie Courante (MLA II) was administered in 2003 by the Direction de la Planification de l'Éducation Fondamentale Secondaire et Technique, Ministère de l'Éducation Nationale to grade 8 (ISCED 2) students in general education programmes in public and private schools. Although the target population was grade 8 students, as administration occurred in October (beginning of a new school year), non-repeaters grade 9 students were assessed on instruments designed for grade 8 students and based on grade 8 curriculum. The Enquête sur les Acquis Scolaires des Élèves de la 8ème année en Mathématiques et en Sciences liées à la Vie Courante is part of the Monitoring Learning Achievement (MLA) initiative, jointly conducted between 1992 and 2003 by UNESCO and UNICEF. As part of the MLA project, assessments were conducted in more than 50 countries. The first phase of the project (MLA I) assessed grade 4 students in Literacy, Numeracy and Life skills. The second phase (MLA II) started in 2002 and focused on lower secondary grades, assessing Mathematics, Science, and Life skills.
The MLA I was was administered in Madagascar to grade 4 students in 1998.
The MLA II is a low-stake assessment. It is a written assessment, administered face-to-face and delivered through paper-pencil tests. All test-takers are presented with the same cognitive booklets or tests, which are aligned with the national curriculum.
The MLA II has the objective of monitoring the education quality levels.
Random sample
Results are reported at the sub-national and national levels. Data are disaggregated by sex, geographic location (urban and rural), major cities and type of schools (public and private).
Results are published in reports that are available in print.

The Enquête sur les Acquis Scolaires des Élèves de la 8ème année en Mathématiques et en Sciences liées à la Vie Courante comprises two tests: a Mathematics test, and a Science test. Each test has a duration of one hour. The Mathematics test comprises the following sub-domains:
- Algebra
- Arithmetics
- Geometry
The Science test comprises the following sub-domains:
- Life sciences
- Earth Science
- Physics
- Chemistry
Description of test items: Test items consist of multiple choice questions with three or more response options and open-ended questions requiring short constructed responses.
Description of stimuli: Test stimuli consist of continuous, non-continuous and mixed.
Reporting metrics: Student performance is reported by proficiency levels. The minimum requirement to meet the national standard is a score of 50%. The three proficiency levels are defined as follows:
- Less than 50%: Low mastery
- 50 to 74%: Medium mastery
- 75% and above: High mastery
