The sampling frame is based on data from the latest population and housing census (2009, Institut National de la Statistique).

The sample was drawn using a stratified two-stages method. The Enumeration Areas, as defined by the 2009 census, constitute the Primary Sampling Units (PSUs). The stratification variables are the region, and the geographic location (urban and rural).

In the first stage, the PSUs are selected within each stratum using probability proportional to size.
In the second stage, 20 households are sampled in each selected PSU.
