Summary
The Certificat de Fin du Premier Cycle de l'Enseignement Secondaire is administered annually by the Direction de l'Enseignement Secondaire, Ministère de l'Éducation, de la Culture et de la Science to grade 9 (ISCED 2) students in general education programme in public schools. No diploma is administered to grade 9 students, since 2010, a simple certificate or "attestation" is issued to certify achievement of grade 9.The Certificat de Fin du Premier Cycle de l'Enseignement Secondaire is a high-stake and mandatory examination that certifies completion of lower secondary education. It is a requirement for students wishing to pursue higher secondary education (ISCED 3).
Passing the Certificat de Fin du Premier Cycle de l'Enseignement Secondaire allows reintegration of out-of-school children and youth into the school system at the next appropriate grade.
The Certificat de Fin du Premier Cycle de l'Enseignement Secondaire is administered face-to-face. It comprises a written component, delivered through paper-pencil tests, and an oral component. All test-takers are presented with the same cognitive booklets or tests, which are aligned with the national curriculum.
The Certificat de Fin du Premier Cycle de l'Enseignement Secondaire serves the following purposes:

Scope
The Certificat de Fin du Premier Cycle de l'Enseignement Secondaire comprises two mandatory subjects administered in Portuguese. These subjects and the duration of each test are listed below:- Mathematics, 120 minutes
- Portuguese language, 120 minutes
Description of test items: Test items consist of multiple choice questions with three or more response options, open-ended questions requiring short constructed responses and essay writing.
Description of stimuli: Test stimuli consist of continuous and mixed.
Reporting metrics: Student performance is reported by the average score. The minimum requirement to meet the national standard is a score of 10 out of 20, or 50%. The two tests have a total of 20 points each.The student is promoted to the next grade if he scores at least 10 points in each subject.
