Summary
The Évaluation des Acquis des élèves du Primaire (EAEP) has been administered since 2000 by the Ministère de l'Enseignement Primaire, de l'Alphabétisation, de la Promotion des Langues Nationales et de l'Éducation Civique to grade 2, grade 4 and grade 6 (ISCED 1) students in public and private schools. It has been administered four times, on a three-year cycle since its inception: in 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2011. The next administration was planned in 2014. The Évaluation des Acquis des élèves du Primaire is a low-stake assessment for students. It is administered face-to-face and delivered through paper-pencil tests. All test-takers are presented with the same cognitive booklets or tests, which are aligned with the national curriculum.
The assessment serves the following purposes:
- supporting teachers (training, relevant materials, etc.)
- monitoring education quality levels
- planning education policy reforms

Data are disaggregated by geographic location (urban and rural), major cities and type of school (public and private).
Results are published in reports, which are available in print.
Scope
The EAEP comprises two subjects in grade 2 and grade 4, and three subjects in grade 6. All subjects are administered in French. The subjects and duration of each test are listed below:Grade 2:
- French, 45 minutes
- Mathematics, 45 minutes
Grade 4:
- French, 60 minutes
- Mathematics, 60 minutes
Grade 6:
- French, 90 minutes
- Mathematics, 90 minutes
- Sciences, 90 minutes
Description of test items: The test items consist of multiple choice questions with three or more response options and open-ended questions requiring short constructed responses.
Description of stimuli: Test stimuli consist of continuous, non-continuous, mixed and multiple texts.
Reporting metrics: Student performance is reported by average score. The minimum requirement to meet the national standard is 50 out of 100, or 50%.
Students are categorised into one of these four levels, based on their performance in set of competencies:
- Desired competency level: the student masters at least 80% of the competencies assessed
- Minimum competency level: the student masters between 50% et 80% of the competencies assessed
- Below the minimum competency level: the student masters between 25% to less than 50% of the competencies assessed
- Dropout level: the student masters less than 25% of the competencies assessed
Students who are categorised at the Minimum competency level (or above) are considered to have reached the minimum national standard of their respective grade.
